An Overview Of Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart disease is now recognized as a common factor for the development of heart diseases apart from the usual self-induced risk factors such as unhealthy diets, stressful lifestyles, substance abuse and excessive smoking. Not all heart disease is brought about external factors, nor does it take extensive periods of time in all cases, for the development of heart diseases. Presently, one of the most widely recognized types of coronary or heart disease worldwide is congenital (present at birth) heart disease.

Congenital Heart Disease Details

Congenital heart disease, for those unfamiliar with the terminology, refers specifically to any heart defects that may be apparent at the birth of an infant. Being that as it may, problems derived from congenital heart disease have to be treated with urgent attention or it is possible that serious consequences might occur. It is unfortunate that not all congenital heart defects are discovered at the time of birth of an infant and treatment may only occur much later in their life. In special circumstances, highly specialized treatments may be required since extensive damage to the heart may have already resulted post-birth and possibly well into adulthood, when the problem of congenital heart disease is first discovered.

Congenital Heart Defects In Newborns

It is difficult to believe, but certain types of congenital heart disease are actually self treating. This means that the congenital heart defect present (for example a hole in the heart that includes the valves themselves) can heal with no surgical or otherwise intervention. Although this might sound unbelievable, it is a fact! That is not to say that the condition does not require serious consideration. However, often a congenital heart defect takes care of itself. But in many instances major surgery is needed to correct any defects that are present.

If a newborn infant is found to be suffering from a congenital heart disease, parents are often alarmed. The condition of living with a congenital heart defect is life threatening to a degree but it is treatable. In most cases, unless damage to the heart is extreme the pediatric congenital heart disease can effectively be treated with surgery.

Any surgery is complicated, but particularly where the heart is concerned and is generally associated with a number of risks. The probability of permanently correcting problems associated with congenital heart disease is high. So when congenital heart disease is discovered, the patient need not unduly worry and should seek prompt medical attention from a qualified physician to take curative measures to eradicate the problem so that he or she can live with confidence thereafter.
